Dandelion Mother Tincture: properties and benefits

Properties of Dandelion in Herbal Tradition.

The dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is a perennial herb belonging to the Asteraceae.

With its choleretic, cholagogue, and diuretic properties, is an herb capable of increasing bile production and stimulating bile flow, thereby improving liver function and digestion.

Let’s take a closer look.

Dandelion, what is it?

The Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), also known as “lion’s tooth,” “piss-a-bed,” or “blowball,” is it is a plant wild a perennial herb belonging to the Asteraceae family particularly widespread throughout Italy, and beyond.

The dandelion is also known as the “meadow sunflower,” because of its intensely yellow flower heads, which close at sunset and reopen when the light returns.

The plant is characterized by:

  • root: taprooted, it develops at shallow depths, but can extend considerably into the soil and become notably robust.

  • leaves: they have toothed edges and are oblong and lanceolate in shape. They open in a rosette directly at the base of the roots, at ground level.

  • flower: it has a central golden-yellow button (the flower head), from which several rows of petals extend, folded backward to form a kind of inverted basket.

The benefits of dandelion:

Dandelion is a plant rich in benefits, which can be used both as a food and as an herbal remedy.

In fact, when used as a food, it is used to increase portions of soluble fiber, phytosterols, phenolic antioxidants, potassium, magnesium, vitamin C and carotenoids; in herbal medicine, however, it is used for its diuretic, digestive, choleretic, and liver-cleansing benefits.

These benefits are mainly due to the presence of flavonoids, triterpenes, sesquiterpene lactones, and inulin contained in the plant itself, particularly in its roots.

The main benefits of dandelion are:

  • cholagogues: thanks to taraxacin, which stimulates the gallbladder, increasing bile production
  • diuretic: thanks to the presence of flavonoids and, in part, potassium salts, which stimulate diuresis by promoting the elimination of excess fluids.
  • choleretic
  • liver-detoxifying
  • anti-inflammatory
  • cholesterol-lowering

Dandelion Supplement: its properties:

The Alcohol-Free Dandelion Mother Tincture, or Glyceric Dandelion Macerate, is a natural remedy that can be claimed to have:

The benefits of Dandelion for the liver.

Dandelion is considered a plant that supports the liver, and its positive effects their effects on liver function have been known since the Middle Ages.

These beneficial properties are concentrated in the root, which is rich in triterpenic alcohols (taraxerol), sterols, vitamins (A, B, C, D), and inulin. It is precisely these bitter compounds (such as taraxacin) and mineral salts that give dandelion tonic and digestive properties, managing to stimulate bile production and bile flow, which support the liver's work.

Dandelion Mother Tincture

Mother tincture (MT) is a liquid preparation obtained by extracting the fresh plant material through percolation o maceration with a suitable solvent.

The solvent most commonly used in mother tinctures is a hydroalcoholic solution (water + alcohol) with a variable concentration (most often between 60° and 80°), depending on the solubility of the active ingredients to be extracted.

The dandelion mother tincture it is an herbal preparation extracted from the plant's leaves and fruits, which are macerated at a 1:10 ratio in a solution of water and alcohol. It is an herbal remedy considered useful for its sedative and antidepressant properties due to its beneficial effects on the nervous system.

Glyceric Dandelion Macerate: what is it?

In recent years, Mother Tinctures extracted with Vegetable Glycerin instead of Alcohol have become increasingly popular, making them better from several points of view. Furthermore, since Glycerin is a less powerful and therefore less extractive type of solvent than Alcohol, innovative extraction techniques such as Ultrasound Extraction are used.

Ultrasound extraction is an innovative, clean, easy and quick extraction technique that allows the active ingredients to be extracted from plants and medicinal herbs in particular, and quality phytoextracts to be produced, using exclusively the mechanical action exerted by the cavitation effect produced by sound waves.

The Dandelion Mother Tincture is obtained by hydroglyceric maceration of Milk Thistle seeds, always using a 1:10 ratio, and is an innovative type of Mother Tincture which, having been obtained through the ultrasound process, makes it better from several points of view.
